Subject: Blues man Fiester dies at 52
Message: I doubt many people in this area knew who this fellow was or knew just how important he was to the blues scene in that area and beyond. I only met him a couple of times - we jammed at a small blues fest in his area where they were always honored with headlining status even though they were only "locals". He was a fantastic person and a fantastic player and will be missed greatly. GH/SS ___________________________________________________________________________________ http://www.spacecoastblues.org/index.html http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050822/NEWS01/508220336/-1/archives Blues man Fiester dies at 52 Guitarist took show across nation BY RICK NEALE FLORIDA TODAY COCOA - The MTV guitarist who opened for The Rolling Stones lived here, inside a tiny pink- and purple-painted detached apartment in the corner of his mother's fenced back yard. Dave Fiester crisscrossed the country during his 40-year musical career, wailing the blues and improvising guitar solos at countless arenas, clubs and bars. After logging appearances on "American Bandstand" and "Solid Gold," Fiester joined The Legendary Groove Monsters in 1985, jamming for a multi-generational fan base at Brevard hangouts like Norman's Raw Bar & Grill in Cocoa Village and Lou's Blues in Indialantic. Offstage, away from the lights, he helped care for his 77-year-old mother, Virginia, in the years after his father passed away. Fiester, a trend-bucking singer, guitarist and harmonica player, died Saturday at his Cocoa home. He was 52. "Dave lived his life, and he did it on his terms," said his younger sister, Lori. "I didn't see Dave conform to many things, and he did it his way. He was so influential on this scene for so many years -- when there wasn't even a scene. "His main love was his family and his music." The cause of death has not been determined. Fiester battled health problems over the past year, Virginia said. A memorial service has not yet been scheduled. Fiester died three days after he shared dinner with his surviving immediate family: Virginia, Lori, brother Paul and sister Diana. The event marked the first time the relatives had traveled to Cocoa to meet in unison in a few years, Lori said. The longtime bluesman became entranced by a Muddy Waters song at age 12. Lori recalled how he formed his first band, Pig Town Lords, with Paul and some school buddies in El Paso, Texas, in 1966 or so -- she was the group's elementary school-age go-go dancer. Fiester went on to work as a full-time musician almost his entire adult life. Lori said he was still working on unfinished songs, found alongside recording equipment inside his apartment. Sporting straight belly-length hair, he hit it big during the early 1980s by landing a spot in The Henry Paul Band. Fiester played lead guitar and sang, contributing to three albums and appearing on an MTV special. The Southern rockers opened for The Rolling Stones and The Allman Brothers, among others. Fiester and the Legendary Groove Monsters cut two albums, "I Gotta Cure For That" in 1990 and "Jammin' Live," recorded in 1995 in Cocoa Beach. Brevard Live magazine named Fiester its first Entertainer of the Year in 2003. "He was our greatest," Publisher Heike Clarke said. "Everybody that you would call would say that. He was very sensitive, very talented. We were all his friends and fans. "Our hearts are broken." Clarke said she spoke to Fiester about 10 days ago. Though health issues forced him to cancel The Groove Monsters' remaining gigs this year, he was plotting a comeback. "He had all the intentions to come back strong next year," she said. Fiester performed at numerous local fundraisers and benefit concerts over the years, including a Lou's Blues jam last summer to raise money for victims of Hurricane Charley. Lori answered a variety of calls Sunday on Fiester's black cordless phone, which doubled as the Legendary Groove Monsters' "grooveline." "I'm pretty fried," she said. "He will be missed by many people. I've had about 20 calls on this phone today -- lots of shock, disbelief and sadness." Virginia said her son enjoyed hunting. He traveled as far as Idaho on his trips. He also loved his pet boxers, Dakota and Cowboy.

Message: He said to me one night in Sarasota at the 5 O'clock club, "you guys are good--you need to keep playing." I said, "well, we're just starting out, we need to work on (this and that, etc.)" He cut me off: "You keep doing it, you guys are good." A little louder this time. I said, "How do you know? You ain't never seen us." Ooops. "People that I know who's opinion I respect have seen you play, heard you do my songs, and said you are good!" (said Rock, now getting into the arguement, and about two inches from my face. "Oh. Thank You, Rock" was all I said, with a smile almost as big as his. Then we went on and did those things he ought not to do. And he will live forever through his music and in our hearts. Only two people I ever saw play in person could make me feel it from my head to my toes: Stevie Ray and Rock Bottom. It was all about tone. God Bless Rock Bottom.
